EKM specializes in various branches of the law including: 

Oil and Gas  
EKM was the legal advisor of Chevron Oil Company of Standard Oil Company of California. This included counseling and advice on the interpretation of the Production Oil Agreement, relations with Government and with contractors, subcontractors and members of the community providing services to the Company both in Khartoum and in the oilfields. In addition to that, the office provided legal services for Parker Drilling Company Limited.


Corporate Work
  
EKM has been involved in the formation, registration, management and policy making companies and branches of companies and joint ventures between Sudanese, and foreigners, and foreign standalone companies working on all aspects of trade, business, industry, agriculture and foreign investments. In development fields   Work includes registration, submission of annual returns, attendance and advice at general and Board meetings, representation as members on the Board and constant advice on company’s business. The firm is constantly engaged in the formulation and interpretation of contracts between the various companies and/or individuals.

Banking and Projects Finance  
The firm has a long history in cooperation with banking, having worked for Bank America and Chase Manhattan before stopping their business in the Sudan. Presently the firm is the retained lawyer for the Bank of Khartoum, the largest bank in Sudan with joint Emirates – Sudanese capital. Exim Bank of China.

The Firm  is the legal counsel for the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and in this capacity the Firm  participated in the structuring and availing finance to most of the Textile factories established in Sudan during the seventies of the last century , examples; Gezira Managil Textile Company Limited, Cotton Textile Mill Company, Khartoum Spinning and Weaving Company Limited. In addition to that, the office participated in arranging finance for, Seleit Food Production Co Ltd, Kassala Fruit Processing Company ,White Nile Sugar Company Project from different finance institutions including, Islamic Development Bank (IDB) Jeddah, Saudi Development Fund, Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development, The OPEC Fund and a syndication of National and International Banks and financial Institutions led by United Capital Bank (UCP). The Firm acted as retained counsel for most of the companies operating these projects.

Arbitration  
EKM has been engaged in several disputes referred by and between Sudanese parties, as well as between the latter and foreign entities.These included:

  1. Construction Contract between Atlas Company (Egyptian contractor) and the Sudanese Social Insurance Fund? (Sudanese) for the construction  of a multi stoney tower in  Khartoum.

  2. Dispute between Capcon, an Indian Construction Company, and Sudan Gezira Textile Company over the construction of  a textile factory in Sudan  – venue London.

  3. Dispute between the Government of Sudan and  French contracting company over construction work at Juba airport and Jongelli Canal, venue ICC, Paris.

  4. Dispute between Government of Sudan and a German Contractor involving the rehabilitation of Roseirs Dam in Sudan. Venue ICC, Paris.

  5. Dispute between Sudan Gum Arabic Company and another Sudanese Company over a financing contract  venue, Khartoum. 

  6. Complex claims and counterclaims between Kenana Sugar Co. – the largest Sugar Production Company in Africa, and various contractors and suppliers. Long and difficult discussions and negotiations were conducted in Paris, London and Tokyo resulting in Kenana successfully defending the claim and winning every counterclaim.

Litigation  
The firm has always been known for its extensive experience of national, cross-border and international litigation and arbitration, as well as other forms of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR). Our litigation team of lawyers is headed by senior litigators with commercial backgrounds and is well known for adopting a practical and commercially aware approach to disputes. Our team of advocates involved in litigation are all qualified to appear before the courts and tribunals of Sudan. Our practice covers all aspects of general corporate and commercial law, with specializations in banking and finance, commercial agency, construction, employment, fraud, maritime, real estate and trade. Besides; our advocates have a wide experience in enforcement of foreign judgments and arbitral awards.

Human Rights and Humanitarian Law  
Human Rights and Humanitarian Law: The firm pays special attention to legal aspects of human rights and humanitarian law especially in crisis situation. It undertakes research, maintains relationships and provides counsel to such organizations as various UN/and AU departments and several international and regional human rights and humanitarian NGOs. Members of the firm regularly participate in international and regional gatherings specialized in these matters.

As representatives of the main diplomatic missions the Firm has been able to establish a good practice of dealing with issues relating to the status of embassies and diplomatic missions as they relate to their work status and any problems they may face in the Sudan.
